The letter written by the apostle Paul to the Romans is a rich treatise on the grace and goodness of God towards men. As the apostle to the Gentiles, Paul had not met those to whom his letter was sent. He begins by identifying himself and his intended audience, and clarifying the nature and purpose of his ministry, that of a servant under His Master, Jesus Christ, sent out as Christ’s ambassador with the proclamation of God’s good news pertaining to Christ.

In a few short lines, Paul succeeds at establishing both the humanity and the deity of Christ Himself, as well as the historical anticipation of His coming in fulfillment of God’s express promise recorded throughout the Old Testament.

Paul’s letter to the Romans is a wonderful dissertation on the tremendous grace of God towards men. Paul introduces himself as one having authority to speak, by virtue of being an ‘apostle’ or one sent out, an ambassador of Jesus Christ. In the course of his  letter to the Romans, Paul identifies the Lord Jesus as the Christ, or the Messiah the Jews awaited, in fulfilment of the prophecies given by God so they would know the Messiah when He came. Paul also asserts unequivocally that Jesus is also the Son of God.

Paul’s purpose in writing to his letter to the Romans becomes clear as the letter develops; there were misunderstandings among the people about how Christ’s Gospel affected each of the people of the Jews and the Gentiles, those who were not part of the nation of Israel...

The Bible is God’s word to man. It has specific meaning for all men at all times. If the meaning of Scripture is fluid (changeable), or subjective (someone’s interpretation or opinion), God has said nothing to us, and we have nothing to say to the world. Our hope is based upon His word being Truth, as Jesus declared it to be.

The Bible was written by ordinary men under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit. It is not restricted to those with special training or higher learning, but is open to any who read or hear. Its message is not complex or difficult, except to the extent that men may choose to rebel against its author, and therefore its content.

Study of Scripture is a two-fold exercise:

Intellectual – engaging the mind in discovering what is said.

In these Bible Studies I will address individual Books of the Bible to expand the reader’s knowledge and understanding of the Person and Nature of God, the nature and purpose of the material world, the nature and role of humans in God’s creation, and Man’s Relationship with God.

The Bible declares itself throughout to be the Word of God.  Whenever you read the phrase, “Thus saith the LORD…”, you have the words God spoke to the man who recorded the words...

            Therefore, you are defenceless, oh person! Everyone who judges, for in that which you judge the other, you are condemning yourself, for you who are judging are committing the same things!

2:2        οιδαμεν δε οτι το κριμα του θεου εστιν κατα αληθειαν επι τους τα τοιαυτα πρασσοντας

            We recognize that the judgment of God is according to truth on those who commit such (things).

2:3        λογιζη δε τουτο ω ανθρωπε ο κρινων τους τα το...

1    τι ουν το περισσον του ιουδαιου η τις η ωφελεια της περιτομης

      Then what (is) the prerogative (excessive) (perisson) of the Jew, or what the benefit of the circumcision?

2    πολυ κατα παντα τροπον πρωτον μεν γαρ οτι επιστευθησαν τα λογια του θεου

      Much according to every manner! First indeed because they were entrusted with the oracles of God

3    τι γαρ ει ηπιστησαν τινες μη η απιστια αυτων την πιστιν του θεου καταργησει

      For what if some disbelieved? Their unbelief shall not nullify the faith of God. (second clause reads:

4:1        What then shall we say Abraham our father according to flesh to have found?

            τι ουν ερουμεν αβρααμ τον πατερα ημων ευρηκεναι κατα σαρκα

4:2        For if Abraham by works (deeds) was justified, he has boast – but not toward God.

            ει γαρ αβρααμ εξ εργων εδικαιωθη εχει καυχημα αλλ ου προς τον θεον

4:3        for what says the Scripture, but ‘Abraham believed to (lit: trusted) God, and it was reckoned to him for righteousness.

            τι γαρ η γραφη λεγει επιστευσεν δε αβρααμ τω θεω και ελογισθη αυτω εις δικαιοσυνην

Chapter 5

1       δικαιωθεντες ουν εκ πιστεως ειρηνην εχομεν προς τον θεον δια του κυριου ημων ιησου χριστου

Being then justified from faith, we have peace toward God through our Lord Jesus Christ,

2       δι ου και την προσαγωγην εσχηκαμεν τη πιστει εις την χαριν ταυτην εν η εστηκαμεν και καυχωμεθα επ ελπιδι της δοξης του θεου

through Whom also we have access to the faith into this grace in which we stand and rejoice (boast) on the hope of the glory of God.
