“… upon this Rock I will build my church; and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it.” Matt 16:18b

Jesus speaking to Peter is recorded as saying that the gates of Hell should not prevail against the church of Jesus Christ. He did not say that the armies of hell shall not be able to destroy the church, but that the gates of hell shall not prevail against – or withstand – the church of Christ. This is battle language with the church on the offensive.

The church of Christ is called to storm the gates of hell. Hell is the prison of every man and woman who has not faith in Christ. Every cult member, and every person without Christ is presently consigned to hell.

Jehovah’s Witnesses Watchtower Society rejects Jesus Christ as God. The original Jehovah’s Witnesses Watchtower Society argument against the deity of Jesus Christ was that there was only one God, Jehovah, therefore Jesus could not be God. They had a problem with Isaiah 9:6 and John 1:1, in which He is clearly referred to as “mighty God” and “God”, so The Watchtower Society adapted their teaching; they now say that Jesus is the mighty God, but Jehovah is Almighty God. In other words, in order to support their argument that Jesus is not God because there is only one God, they assert at least two Gods: Jesus the mighty God and Jehovah the Almighty God.

The most commonly-held materialistic explanation for the origin of the universe is that a ‘cosmic egg’ or ‘singularity’ expanded into the complex, ordered system we see today. To invoke this ‘cosmic egg’ is a circular argument. Let me explain.

The common understanding of the term “universe” is the sum of all space, time, and matter that exists. The properties and characteristics of a physical universe prohibit an ‘eternal’ universe, demanding that the universe came into existence at a specific time in history. But in order for the ‘big bang’ to have occurred, either matter and/or energy must have been self-existent, or they came into being, uncaused out of nothing. Atheists are not free to redefine the terms. “Atheist” means “no God”. The atheist argues that he does not believe there is a God, saying there is no evidence for God. But his argument is a distraction; regardless of his wording, the atheist proposes ‘no God”, and when he is offered the evidence, he rejects it. He insists that evidence “doesn’t count”, asserting the consequent that his position is true due to the evidence being false without regard to the nature or essence of the evidence offered. There is no real effort to consider what he’s shown.

Political and social unrest dominate the news , and economic distress grips the entire world. People are easily overcome with a sense of hopelessness and fear. As we approach Christmas this year, it seems appropriate to refocus our attention on the reason we celebrate at all. Christ entered history in times like ours: the Mediterranean world was under the occupation of the brutal Roman Empire. Corruption and abuse abounded. Taxes were high, the common man oppressed, the ruling powers capricious and often malevolent. Citizens were disillusioned; the nation of Israel had lost sight of their calling, having lost sight of the God Who had called them. The effects of wide-spread paganism were superstition, devaluation of life, and a lack of natural affection among men.

There was a man sent from God whose name was John. This same came for a witness, to bear witness of the Light, that all through him might believe. He was not that Light, but was to bear witness of that Light, that was the True Light which enlightens everyone who comes into the world. John 1:6-9
