Introduction to Apologetics

Christian Apologetics is the defense of the reasonableness, relevance, and importance of Christian faith, the authenticity, reliability, and truth of the Bible.

Is apologetics Biblical?

Some people argue that apologetics is a waste of time, or that it’s unbiblical. A thorough read through the entire book of Acts shows that the apostles and early disciples did not share that position. Christ’s messengers employed a variety of modes and means to communicate the truth of Christ, according to the audience they were addressing. By the time you have finished reading the Book of Acts, you will have read dozens of examples of the followers of Jesus Christ providing an apologetic for the truth and reliability of Holy Scripture, the importance of believing God, and the reasonableness of the Chr...

What is Apologetics?

The following information is intended to provide a framework within which to approach the study of Apologetics.

Definition of Apologetics

The English word “apologetics” derives from the Greek word “apologia”, which means:

“reasoned defence, esp. of Christianity” (Oxford Illustrated Dictionary) or “a speech in defence” (The New Webster Dictionary of the English Language, 1965)

Purpose of Apologetics

To give a defence of 1) the Christian faith   2) the authority of Scripture 3) its relevance

What it is NOT

To use reason and material evidences to ‘prove’ the Bible

Principle

The Bible is true because it is God’s word, not because we can prove it...

Creation in Genesis

The Book of Genesis literally means the ‘book of the generation’. The word ‘generation’ means that which has proceeded from, or been brought into existence, or been born. To ‘generate’ something is to cause it to exist. The Book of Genesis gives the account of how the universe, including all life, came to exist. It also contains the history of the creation of different languages and people groups, and the beginning of the nation of Israel.

The details contained in the first several chapters of Genesis are very specific, and use very specific language to describe what God created, by what mechanism, and in what order...

Creation Beyond Genesis or What the Rest of the Bible Says About the Origin of the Universe and Life on Earth

While Genesis gives the first account of God’s creation of the universe out of nothing by the power of His Word, the entire Bible speaks of the origin of the universe and the creation of life on earth in many places. Many Biblical doctrines are based in some way or to some extent upon the fact of God having miraculously created all material reality directly and in its current and constant form. Hundreds of passages refer to God having formed the earth by His word, of placing the heavenly bodies in their proper places, of setting the bounds of land and seas, of creating various life forms in and for their proper environments, and having created plants and animals according to their specific kinds.

The following are important points of teaching or consideration regarding the essential truth ...

Noah’s Flood

The Bible teaches clearly that the flood God sent in Noah’s day was a world-wide flood that covered then entire planet completely with water, destroying all living creatures not housed on the ark, or capable of living in turbulent waters for long periods of time. Many people, including professing Christians, want to argue that a global flood did not, and even could not, have occurred, that it is a misunderstanding of the Scripture to suggest that God destroyed the entire world with a flood that submerged the surface of the whole globe.

The two issues to consider are what the Bible says about that flood, and what physical evidence exists to support or refute the event...

What Do You Have to Know to Be A Christian?

Do you have to get everything right to be a Christian? No, but there are some things you cannot get wrong and still be a Christian. For instance, you must believe in God in order to be a Christian. But you can’t believe in just any god. You must believe in the God Who has revealed Himself through His Word to men, through His prophets, through the Law, and through Jesus Christ. If you believe in a false god, you are not a Christian, no matter how sincere you are or how well you behave. [1]

Then there is the matter of Truth. You must believe that truth exists, and that it is knowable, because Jesus declared that the Father requires men to worship Him in spirit and in truth. If there is no truth, or it cannot be known, we are unable to obey God’s clear requirement for worship. [2]

A Chr...

The Cosmic Egg is a Circular Argument

The most commonly-held materialistic explanation for the origin of the universe is that a ‘cosmic egg’ or ‘singularity’ expanded into the complex, ordered system we see today. To invoke this ‘cosmic egg’ is a circular argument. Let me explain.

The common understanding of the term “universe” is the sum of all space, time, and matter that exists. The properties and characteristics of a physical universe prohibit an ‘eternal’ universe, demanding that the universe came into existence at a specific time in history. But in order for the ‘big bang’ to have occurred, either matter and/or energy must have been self-existent, or they came into being, uncaused out of nothing. Both of these proposals are scientific impossibilities.

The Big Bang theory proposes a singularity or ‘cos...

The Atheist’s Problem is Not Lack of Evidence

Atheists are not free to redefine the terms. “Atheist” means “no God”. The atheist argues that he does not believe there is a God, saying there is no evidence for God. But his argument is a distraction; regardless of his wording, the atheist proposes ‘no God”, and when he is offered the evidence, he rejects it. He insists that evidence “doesn’t count”, asserting the consequent that his position is true due to the evidence being false without regard to the nature or essence of the evidence offered. There is no real effort to consider what he’s shown.

The Bible states that the very creation shows the existence and nature of God...
