The Book of Revelation Chapter 17, Verse 1
1 (AV) And there came one of the seven angels which had the seven vials, and talked with me, saying unto me, Come hither; I will shew unto thee the judgment of the great whore that sitteth upon many waters:
1 (YLT) And there came one of the seven messengers, who were having the seven vials, and he spake with me, saying to me, ‘Come, I will shew to thee the judgment of the great whore, who is sitting upon the many waters,
1 And one came out of the seven angels (messengers) of those having the seven bowls (phialas – vials) and spoke with me, saying to me, “Here, you! I shall show you the judgment (krima – sentence) of the great prostitute (whore) she sitting on the many waters…’
In a way, Chapter 17 is a great parenthesis in the narrative of the events of the last days. The focus to this point has been global, the events falling upon the entire world, and its population. But Chapter 17 specifically deals with the judgement of a single entity, “the great whore that sits on many waters”. As far as identity is concerned, all John is told is that she represents ‘that great city which reigned over the kings of the earth.”
This “city” with its universal influence of evil and blasphemy, affected and continues to affect at least a significant population world-wide, both national leaders (kings) and national citizens. One angel responsible for pouring out “a vial” of the wrath of God upon earth’s inhabitants, has been commissioned to show John what God will do to this ‘city” because of its blasphemy and its having caused so much of the rest of the world to stumble.
