Polls show most people believe they will go to heaven when they die. But if you had to stand before God in judgement today, how would you do?
The Bible says that anyone who breaks the Law in only one point is guilty of breaking the Law. God is a righteous judge; He must judge each person according to what they have done. Will you be innocent or guilty?
God’s law is perfect; have you kept His perfect law? Have you loved God with all your heart, soul, strength, and mind? Jesus said this was the greatest commandment in all the Law. Have you kept it? If not, you are guilty.
God commanded that no other gods be set up besides Him. What do you worship? For what do you live? What masters your life? Will He judge you guilty or innocent of replacing Him with other “gods”?
God’s name is holy; we are prohibited from using it carelessly, casually, or irreverently. God does not hold someone guiltless who uses God’s name as though it is common or worthless.
Most people think they are good people; they have not murdered, raped, or robbed people. But Jesus said that anyone who is angry with another without cause, is as guilty as the murderer, and anyone who hates his brother is a murderer.
Jesus also said that anyone who looks at someone to lust after them is guilty of adultery in his heart. He said that all the unfaithful, immoral, all idolaters, liars, and murderers have their part in the lake of fire in the judgement. If God judges you according to this holy standard, how will you fare in the last day?
The Scripture says that all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, and that the wages of sin is death. You are part of “all”, and if you are honest, you know that according to God’s standard, you are guilty; your final judgement will be the lake of fire in justice for your sin.
But God does not desire that men perish. He has offered you a way of escape from your death sentence: almighty God took on human flesh in the person of Jesus Christ to bear the penalty in His body for the sins we have committed. He has taken our death penalty upon Himself so that God can apply His payment to our sentence and we can go free.
But you must receive Him in order to receive His benefit. Jesus Christ, the just for the unjust, must become to us Lord and Saviour. We must not trust in our own ‘righteousness’ – before God we are guilty and must be condemned. We must turn from our sin, and trust in Christ’s provision for our sin, His payment of our debt, and receive Him into our lives as our rightful Lord, and He will apply His payment to our debt, releasing us from our death sentence and giving us eternal life. When we receive His salvation, whether we live in the flesh or whether our body dies, we will forever be alive with Christ in eternity, and our bodies will be resurrected with Him in the last day.
Are you good enough to go to heaven? Absolutely not. But God loved you enough to provide a way for wicked men to go free. Turn from your sin and receive Him today, be washed from your sins and be born again into the family of God so that you will escape death and receive eternal life with Christ.
